The holiday of Thanksgiving is a complicated holiday with a lot of falsehoods incorporated into it. While, I believe we need to have a holiday that we give thanks to all that we have, we must also be honest about its history and what it’s become today; a consumer holiday that leads with Black Friday and nulls out Indigenous Day, which for some unknown reason, President Bush chose Black Friday as that day to honor the native people of this land. While I prefer to keep it light, hot, sexy, nasty and fun, I also want to explain why I will be changing how I celebrate this holiday. From this holiday forward, I will celebrate this holiday as a day of mourning for those that this holiday was created, but I will also utilize this day to be thankful for all that I have accomplished in this life; family, good friends, lovers and my fur companions.
The history of Thanksgiving goes back to 1621 and was not an annual feast. Originally it was a feast that celebrated the harvest, a battle victory or the end of a natural disaster.
in October of 1977 is the first time Thanksgiving was celebrated by all of the 13 colonies. It was declared a national day, 11/26; by President George Washington in 1789 for forming a new nation and the creation of the constitution. Even at this time, Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday.
Prior to the Civil War history wants to give Sarah Hale the title of the mother of Thanksgiving because she promoted the ideology behind this holiday back to George Washington to put faith in the nation and its constitution. Her name may sound familiar to many of us who grew up on the nursery rhyme of “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” because she is the author of it. She also was consulted by President Lincoln regarding its merits for an annual holiday to bring the nation together in October 1863.
It’s important to go back to the original ideology of Thanksgiving at this time. In September 1862: a couple of days after the surrender of the Dakota in Minnesota, the military began rapid trials on men who participated in the war. By November 1862, 392 trials had occurred with 303 men sentenced to death and 16 men going to prison.
President Lincoln reviewed the trial transcripts and then issued a list of 39 names to be executed out of the 303 names originally slated for execution. Thanksgiving was celebrated this year in Minnesota. On December 26, 1862 a crowd of approximately 4000 people witnessed and celebrated the mass lynching of these 39 Dakota men.
in October 1863 President Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November would be the annual holiday of Thanksgiving. It remained this date until President Roosevelt (FDR). In 1939 retailers complained that this holiday was affecting Christmas shopping and they were being affected badly. FDR changed the date to the 2nd to the last Thursday in November. This created a political uproar with much confusion. That year, there were 2 Thanksgivings, with only 23 states going with the one declared by FDR. In 1941 congress fixed the issue making the 4th Thursday of November Thanksgiving.
